The land of promise,
Lord, is ours;
The land of honey,
milk, and rest.
We need but conquer
as we go;
Our Lord will drive
them from their nest.
But, Lord, we have
a peaceful spot;
A place that we can
call our home.
We grow so weary of
the fight;
No longer do we want
to roam.
The gentle people
that remain;
Who dwell in towns
we cannot take.
We do not want to
drive them out;
We just want peace;
we need a break.
We won’t fight them;
they won’t fight us;
We will have rest
and dwell in peace.
Yet, Lord, you say
that’s not the truth;
Our trials now will
never cease.
Because we failed
to drive them out,
Forevermore they’ll
cause us pain.
What we had thought
would bring us ease,
Will hold us like
a mighty chain.
Lord, may I now this
lesson learn;
Please drive it deep
into my heart.
Until I leave this
evil world,
My battles never will
depart.
When I shall find
within myself,
Unconquered heart;
rebellious flesh;
The battle trumpet
I will blow;
Once more I’ll join
the fight afresh.
With grit and mud;
with sweat and blood;
With heart and mind;
with toil and prayer;
I’ll show myself to
be a man;
I’ll do for God as
faith will dare.
With God my Helper,
I will fight,
Until the battles
all are done;
Until my days on earth
are o’er;
Until my race has
all been run.
Then I shall go to
my long home,
To be forever with
my Lord.
In that sweet day
I’ll know true peace;
I’ll then remove my
battle sword.
