The Conspiracy of Jehu

INTRODUCTION: This chapter records the vengeance of the Lord against the house of Ahab. Ahab has already died according to the word of the Lord, but God has business to finish with the house of Ahab and with Jezebel. All His prophecies are carried out to the letter. This lesson reminds us that vengeance belongs to the Lord and that He will fulfill His part (Deuteronomy 32:35; Romans 12:19; see also Ecclesiastes 8:11).

  1. THE ANOINTING OF JEHU (2 Kings 9:1-13)
    1. The Command of Elisha (2 Kings 9:1-3)
      1. The call of the young man (2 Kings 9:1)
      2. The command to go (2 Kings 9:1)
        1. Gird up your loins – means to gather the folds of the flowing robes into the girdle for the purpose of running, fighting, etc.
          1. Used literally (Exodus 12:11; 1 Kings 18:46; 2 Kings 4:29)
          2. Used figuratively (Luke 12:35-36; 1 Peter 1:13)
        2. Take this box of oil – used for anointing (Exodus 29:7).
        3. Go to Ramoth-gilead.
      3. The command to find Jehu (2 Kings 9:2)
      4. The command to anoint Jehu (2 Kings 9:3)
        1. Take the box of oil and pour it on his head.
        2. Declare that God has anointed him king over Israel.
        3. Open the door and flee.
    2. The Obedience of the Young Man (2 Kings 9:4-6)
      1. He went to Ramoth-gilead (2 Kings 9:4).
      2. He identified Jehu as captain (2 Kings 9:5).
        1. Among the captains of the host
        2. “I have an errand to thee, O captain.”
      3. He anointed Jehu as king over Israel (2 Kings 9:6).
    3. The Prophecy Concerning Jehu (2 Kings 9:7-10)
      1. To smite the house of Ahab (2 Kings 9:7)
        1. To avenge the blood of the prophets
        2. To avenge the blood of God’s servants at the hand of Jezebel
      2. To cut off the whole house of Ahab (2 Kings 9:8)
      3. To completely destroy the house of Ahab (2 Kings 9:9)
        1. Like the house of Jeroboam
        2. Like the house of Baasha
      4. To fulfill the prophecy against Jezebel (2 Kings 9:10)

    4. The Reaction of Jehu (2 Kings 9:11-13)

      4. Jehu rode in a chariot to Jezreel (2 Kings 9:16).
      5. Ahaziah, king of Judah, was with Joram (2 Kings 9:16).
    2. Not Slowed by Horsemen (2 Kings 9:17-20)
      1. The watchman at Jezreel spied the company with Jehu (2 Kings 9:17).
      2. Joram sent a horseman to check out their intentions (2 Kings 9:17).
      3. Jehu ordered the horseman to keep going (2 Kings 9:18).
      4. Joram sent a second horseman with the same results (2 Kings 9:19-20).
    3. Not Slowed by City Walls (2 Kings 9:20-21)
      1. The watchman recognized Jehu by his driving (2 Kings 9:20).
      2. Joram and Ahaziah went out in a chariot to meet him (2 Kings 9:21).
      3. They met in the portion of Naboth the Jezreelite (2 Kings 9:21).
  3. THE DEATH OF JORAM AND AHAZIAH (2 Kings 9:22-29)
    1. The Death of Joram (2 Kings 9:22-26)
      1. The plea for peace (2 Kings 9:22)
        1. Is it peace?
        2. What peace?
          1. With the whoredoms of Jezebel
          2. And the multitude of her witchcrafts
      2. The attempt to flee (2 Kings 9:23)
        1. He turned his hands and fled.
        2. He cried, “There is treachery, O Ahaziah.”

        1. Jehu drew his bow.
        2. The arrow smote Joram between his arms and came out at his heart.

        2. Remember the guilt of Ahab his father (2 Kings 9:25).
        3. The Lord avenged the sin of Ahab against Naboth (2 Kings 9:26).

      1. His flight (2 Kings 9:27)
      2. His death (2 Kings 9:27)
      3. His burial (2 Kings 9:28)
      4. His reign – beginning in the eleventh year of Joram (2 Kings 9:29)
  4. THE DEATH OF JEZEBEL (2 Kings 9:30-37)
    1. Jezebel’s Preparation (2 Kings 9:30-31)
      1. She heard of Jehu’s arrival (2 Kings 9:30).
      2. She painted her face and tired her head (2 Kings 9:30).
      3. She looked out at a window (2 Kings 9:30).
      4. She challenged the rebellion of Jehu (2 Kings 9:31).
    2. Jezebel’s Betrayers (2 Kings 9:32-33)
      1. Jehu found some allies among the eunuchs (2 Kings 9:32).
      2. The eunuchs threw Jezebel out the window (2 Kings 9:33).
      3. The horses trod her under foot (2 Kings 9:33).
    3. Jezebel’s Destruction (2 Kings 9:34-37)
      1. Jehu sent to bury the body (2 Kings 9:34).
      2. They found only her skull, feet, and palms (2 Kings 9:35).
      3. The prophecy of the Lord was fulfilled (2 Kings 9:36; 1 Kings 21:23).
      4. The carcase of Jezebel could not be recognized (2 Kings 9:37).

CONCLUSION: At times it may appear as though the Lord is not aggressive in executing justice, but He is faithful to execute judgment in His way and in His timing.
