David’s Final Instructions

Scripture Passage: 
1 Chronicles 28:1-21; 1 Chronicles 29:1-30

INTRODUCTION: David gives a final message of instruction to Solomon and to the congregation of Israel. They anoint Solomon the second time as king over Israel (1 Chronicles 29:22). David turns the kingdom over to him and completes his long and successful reign over the people of God. We can learn much from David’s faith, his preparation for the temple, his encouragement of Solomon and the congregation, and his peaceable transfer of power to his son.

  1. DAVID SPEAKS TO THE LEADERS (1 Chronicles 28:1-8)
    1. David Assembles the Leaders (1 Chronicles 28:1).
      1. The groups assemble
      2. The place assembled - Jerusalem
    2. David Explains God’s Denial (1 Chronicles 28:2-3).
      1. David declares his desire to build a house for the Lord (1 Chronicles 28:2).
      2. David informs the leaders that God denied his request (1 Chronicles 28:3).
    3. David Speaks of God’s Choice for King (1 Chronicles 28:4-5).
      1. God chose David to be His king (1 Chronicles 28:4).
        1. Out of Israel, He chose Judah.
        2. Out of Judah, He chose the house of Jesse.
        3. Out of the house of Jesse, He chose David.
      2. God has chosen Solomon to be His king after David (1 Chronicles 28:5).
    4. David Declares God’s Desire to Bless Solomon (1 Chronicles 28:6-7).
      1. Solomon shall build the house of the Lord (1 Chronicles 28:6).
      2. The kingdom of Solomon will be established for ever (1 Chronicles 28:7).
    5. David Challenges the Leaders (1 Chronicles 28:8).
      1. Their twofold audience
        1. The congregation of the Lord
        2. God Himself
      2. Their twofold call
        1. To keep the commandments of the Lord
        2. To seek for all the commandments of the Lord
      3. Their twofold blessing
        1. They may possess the good land.
        2. They may leave it for an inheritance to their children.
  2. DAVID SPEAKS TO SOLOMON (1 Chronicles 28:9-21)
    1. He Gives Solomon a Charge (1 Chronicles 28:9-10).
      1. He gives Solomon a twofold challenge (1 Chronicles 28:9).
        1. He needs to “know” the God of his father.
        2. He needs to “serve him.”
          1. With a perfect heart
          2. With a willing mind
      2. He warns Solomon of the importance of his obedience (1 Chronicles 28:9).
        1. The Lord searcheth all hearts.
        2. The Lord understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts.
        3. If thou seek him, he will be found of thee.
        4. If thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.
      3. He encourages Solomon to do right (1 Chronicles 28:10).
    2. He Gives Solomon a Plan (1 Chronicles 28:11-19).
      1. He gives him the pattern for the Lord’s house (1 Chronicles 28:11-12).
      2. He gives him the plan for the service of God’s house (1 Chronicles 28:13).
      3. He supplies Solomon with gold and silver (1 Chronicles 28:14-18).
      4. He informs Solomon that all of this was of the Lord (1 Chronicles 28:19).
    3. He Encourages Solomon to Trust in God’s Help (1 Chronicles 28:20-21).
      1. The Lord will not fail Solomon (1 Chronicles 28:20).
      2. Solomon is surrounded by good people (1 Chronicles 28:21).
  3. DAVID SPEAKS TO THE CONGREGATION (1 Chronicles 29:1-9)
    1. He Encourages Them to Help Solomon in His Work (1 Chronicles 29:1).
      1. He reminds them of Solomon’s youth.
      2. He reminds them of the importance of the work.
    2. He Tells Them of the Preparations He Has Made (1 Chronicles 29:2-4).
      1. He explains what he collected (1 Chronicles 29:2).
      2. He explains his motive for collecting (1 Chronicles 29:3).
      3. He gives the sum of the collection (1 Chronicles 29:4).
    3. He Encourages Them to Give for the Service (1 Chronicles 29:5-9).
      1. He calls for the willing to step forward (1 Chronicles 29:5).
      2. Leaders offer willingly (1 Chronicles 29:6-7).
      3. Others begin to offer willingly (1 Chronicles 29:8).
      4. The people rejoice over the offering (1 Chronicles 29:9).
  4. DAVID BLESSES THE LORD (1 Chronicles 29:10-19)
    1. He Proclaims the Greatness of the Lord (1 Chronicles 29:10-13).
      1. He praises God (1 Chronicles 29:10-12).
      2. He thanks the Lord (1 Chronicles 29:13).
    2. He Declares the Unworthiness of the People (1 Chronicles 29:14-16).
      1. David confesses his frailty and that of the people (1 Chronicles 29:14-15).
      2. David acknowledges God as the source of the offering (1 Chronicles 29:16).
    3. He Prays for the Preservation of a Right Heart (1 Chronicles 29:17-19).
      1. David expresses the nature of the people’s heart (1 Chronicles 29:17).
      2. David asks the Lord to protect this heart in the people and in Solomon (1 Chronicles 29:18-19).
  5. DAVID TRANSFERS POWER TO SOLOMON (1 Chronicles 29:20-30)
    1. The People Make Sacrifice unto the Lord (1 Chronicles 29:20-21).
      1. The people bow in worship to the Lord (1 Chronicles 29:20).
      2. The people sacrifice to the Lord (1 Chronicles 29:21).
    2. The People Establish Solomon on the Throne (1 Chronicles 29:22-25).
      1. The people make Solomon king (1 Chronicles 29:22).
      2. Solomon sits on the throne of his father (1 Chronicles 29:23).
      3. The people submit themselves to Solomon (1 Chronicles 29:23-24).
      4. The Lord magnifies Solomon (1 Chronicles 29:25).
    3. David Ends His Reign over the Nation of Israel (1 Chronicles 29:26-30).

CONCLUSION: David’s reign comes to an end, but the Lord establishes the kingdom under Solomon. The transition goes smoothly as the people yield themselves to the Lord and to their new king.
