Wisdom Personified
INTRODUCTION: Solomon often gives wisdom a personality. Wisdom cries in the streets (Proverbs 1:20Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
See All...) and is to be treated as a sister (Proverbs 7:4Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:
See All...). Wisdom even builds a house (Proverbs 9:1Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
See All...). But Proverbs, chapter eight, takes this practice to a much higher level. The entire chapter speaks of wisdom as a person. Wisdom cries out as before (Proverbs 8:1Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
See All...). However, in the passage referring to creation (Proverbs 8:22-31 [22] The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
[23] I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
[24] When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
[25] Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
[26] While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
[27] When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
[28] When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
[29] When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
[30] Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
[31] Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
See All...), wisdom takes on a much stronger identity. Wisdom was “set up from everlasting, from the beginning” (Proverbs 8:23I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
See All...). Wisdom was by the Lord, “as one brought up with him” (Proverbs 8:30Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
See All...) and was “daily his delight, rejoicing always before him” (Proverbs 8:30Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
See All...). These statements compare with the part the Word [Jesus Christ] had in creation as described in John 1:1-3 [1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
[2] The same was in the beginning with God.
[3] All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
See All... and the relationship Christ had to the Father as spoken of in His prayer in John 17:5And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
See All..., 24-26). Also, in 1 Corinthians 1:24But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
See All..., Christ is called “the wisdom of God.” Jesus Christ is the wisdom of God in this chapter of Proverbs.
