How to Teach the Bible 0001 - Lesson 2

The Importance of Teaching

Its Purpose

  1. THE GENERAL PURPOSE
    1. Philip and the Eunuch (Acts 8:26-38)
    2. Peter and Cornelius (Acts 10:9-48)
      1. Demolition
        1. The Lord convincing Peter to go to Cornelius (Acts 10:9-19)
        2. Peter’s introduction to Cornelius (Acts 10:24-26)
        3. The Holy Spirit interrupting Peter (Acts 10:44-45)
      2. Building
        1. Peter’s message to Cornelius (Acts 10:34-43)
        2. The Lord working with Peter on transition (Acts 10:46-48; Acts 2:38)
    3. Paul and Barnabas at Antioch (Acts 11:25-26)
    4. Paul and Barnabas at Antioch of Pisidia (Acts 13:14-44)
    5. Paul and Barnabas at Lystra (Acts 14:8-18)
      1. Demolition (Acts 14:8-15)
      2. Building (Acts 14:15-18)
    6. Paul in Athens
      1. Demolition (Acts 17:16-25)
      2. Building (Acts 17:26-34)
    7. Aquilla and Priscilla with Apollos (Acts 18:24-28)
      1. Apollos knew only the baptism of John.
      2. Apollos apparently became a great teacher (1 Corinthians 3:4-6).
    8. Paul in Ephesus (Acts 19:8; Acts 20:31-32)
  2. TEACHING OTHERS WHAT TO DO (Exodus 4:15; Deuteronomy 4:10)
    1. Positive (Genesis 2:16)
      1. The first command of the Bible is a positive command.
      2. The goal of teaching is to instruct others in the right things to do.
    2. Negative (Genesis 2:17)
      1. The second command of the Bible is a negative command.
      2. Not only should we teach others to do the right things, but we must also instruct them on the things that they should not do.
      3. Consider the breakdown of the purpose of scripture as found in 2 Timothy 3:16-17:
        1. For doctrine – this would be the teachings of scripture.
        2. For reproof – this would be the enlightenment of error.
        3. For correction – this would be the enlightenment of righteousness.
        4. For instruction in righteousness – this would be the instructions needed to do righteous things.
        5. For the perfecting of the believer – this would be the growth of a believer (2 Peter 3:18).
        6. To furnish them unto all good works – this would be the equipping for obedience to the scriptures.
  3. TEACHING OTHERS WHAT TO SAY (Exodus 4:12; Deuteronomy 4:10)
    1. We Teach To Encourage Others To Teach (Deuteronomy 4:10).
      1. If we do not speak concerning the truth, the next generation will not speak concerning the truth.
      2. If we speak things that are not sound in doctrine, the next generation will repeat the same things.
      3. If we speak things that are right, then we encourage the next generation to do the same.
    2. We Teach To Instruct Future Generations (2 Timothy 2:2).
      1. Consider the natural pattern of obedience:
        1. Generation 1 teaches generation 2 the things that they learned.
        2. Generation 2 teaches generation 3 the things that they learned on their own, plus the things taught to them by generation 1.
        3. Generation 3 teaches generation 4 the things that they learned on their own, plus the things taught to them by generations 1 and 2.
      2. Consider the state of Christianity today:
        1. Generation 1 fails to teach generation 2 all that they learned.
        2. Generation 2 teaches generation 3 some things that they learned from generation 1, but it becomes mixed with some error.
        3. Generation 3 teaches generation 4 a mix of ideas.  They mix Biblical Christianity, humanism, philosophy, superstitions.
        4. Eventually, people no longer have any concept of truth.  Truth becomes relevant and no longer governs the lives of men.
