- THE NAMES OF GOD (Continued)
- Primary Names: The Old Testament uses three primary names for God. In the English, they are usually seen as God, Lord, and LORD. NOTE: The Jews often refer to God simply as Hashem, which means The Name. (Continued)
- LORD (Continued)
- Jehovah is the unique name of God. Other names, like God and Lord, may be used at times of other beings (1 Corinthians 8:5For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
See All...); but Jehovah is the name that refers only to the God of the Bible (Psalm 83:18That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
See All...). - Jehovah is primarily the self-sufficient God. He is the source of His own existence. He is independent of all other existence and would be Himself even if nothing else existed.
- He revealed Himself to Moses as the great I AM (Exodus 3:13-15 [13] And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
[14] And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
[15] And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.
See All...). He calls Himself. I AM THAT I AM. This is an identification of who the LORD is. - According to John 5:26For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
See All..., "the Father hath life in himself." That is, the life of God comes from God. According to John 5:26For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
See All..., "the Father hath life in himself." That is, the life of God comes from God. - Of Him scripture declares, "Who only hath immortality" (1 Timothy 6:16Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
See All...). Only God has full control over His own existence. - God powerfully proclaims His own existence in Deuteronomy 32:40For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.
See All... - “For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever." Coming from anyone other than God, this would be the ravings of a madman. From God, it is simply the truth. - Seven times in the Bible, God declares Himself to be the first and the last (Isaiah 41:4Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he.
See All...; Isaiah 44:6Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
See All...; Isaiah 48:12Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.

See All...; Revelation 22:13I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
See All...). Nothing came before Him and nothing will exist beyond Him. - Thirty times the scriptures refer to him as the “living God” (Deuteronomy 5:26For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?
See All... [first reference]; 1 Samuel 17:36Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

[last reference]). - Since the LORD is the only true (the unique) God and the self-sufficient God, He is also the Redeemer God (Exodus 6:6Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:
See All...; Deuteronomy 7:8But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

See All...; Isaiah 63:16Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.
See All...). This trinity of meaning reveals the significance of the name LORD. - The only true God (Psalm 83:18That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
See All...) - The living God (Jeremiah 10:10But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

See All...) - The Redeemer (Isaiah 47:4As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.
See All...) - God is not fully known as LORD until the one knowing Him has experienced redemption by Him. This explains the significance of Exodus 6:1-8 [1] Then the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.
[2] And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD:
[3] And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.
[4] And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers.
[5] And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant.
[6] Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:
[7] And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
[8] And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD.
See All.... The patriarchs knew the name JEHOVAH, but they did not truly know Him by that name. They knew, or experienced, Him as God Almighty (Genesis 17:1And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

However, it was only after the bondage of Egypt and the deliverance from that land to the land of promise by their Redeemer that they could truly know Him as LORD. Only those who have been redeemed from bondage can fully know God as LORD. Not only was He revealed as such to Israel (Exodus 6:3And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.
See All...); He offers this revelation of Himself to all men (Psalm 83:18That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.

Each of these titles could be studied in depth in order to understand the fullness of God’s revelation of Himself in that title. This demonstrates that the study of God can be a lifelong work.]
- Almighty God or the Almighty
- Scripturally, the title is used in several contexts.
- This is the name by which God revealed Himself to Abraham and the patriarchs (Genesis 17:1And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

- Job was certainly written around the time of Abraham. That would explain the title being common to both.
- However, Job was not of God’s chosen people. Therefore, the Almighty in Job is only partially the God of blessing. In this book, much emphasis is placed on the Almighty being the God of judgment (Job 5:17Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:
