    5. A Book of Questions
      1. The Book of Amos has 31 questions.  This is more than any other of the Minor Prophets.
      2. And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD. (Amos 2:11)
      3. Can two walk together, except they be agreed? (Amos 3:3)
      4. Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? Will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing? (Amos 3:4)
      5. Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him? Shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all? (Amos 3:5)
      6. Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? Shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it? (Amos 3:6)
      7. The lion hath roared, who will not fear? The Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy? (Amos 3:8)
      8. Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? (Amos 5:18)
      9. Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light?  Even very dark, and no brightness in it? (Amos 5:20)
      10. Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel? (Amos 5:25)
      11. Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? Or their border greater than your border? (Amos 6:2)
      12. And a man's uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? (Amos 6:10)
      13. Shall horses run upon the rock? Will one plow there with oxen? (Amos 6:12)
      14. Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength? (Amos 6:13)
      15. And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. (Amos 7:2)
      16. Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. (Amos 7:5)
      17. And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? (Amos 7:8)
      18. And he said, Amos, what seest thou? (Amos 8:2)
      19. Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?  (Amos 8:5)
      20. That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat? (Amos 8:6)
      21. Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? (Amos 8:8)
      22. Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir? (Amos 9:7)
      23. The Lord asks questions of men to get them to either come into agreement with Him or condemn themselves.
      24. Much of what men will be judged for will have to do with their own words (Matthew 12:36-37).
    6. The Names of God
      1. Lord (4 times)
      2. God (3 times)
      3. God of hosts (7 times)
      4. LORD God of hosts (1 time)
      5. Lord GOD (21 times)
      6. LORD (59 times)
      7. The names LORD and GOD are translated from the name Jehovah.
        1. Jehovah is the unique name of God. Other names, like God and Lord, may be used at times of other beings; but Jehovah is the name that refers only to the God of the Bible.
        2. Jehovah is primarily the self-sufficient God. He is the source of His own existence. He is independent of all other existence and would be Himself, even if nothing else existed.
        3. This makes perfect sense that this name would be magnified during a time when nations are being judged (Isaiah 40:12-26).

Chapter 1

The Coming Judgment

  1. THE OPENING REMARKS (Amos 1:1-2)
    1. The Author (Amos 1:1)
      1. Amos
      2. Among the herdmen of Tekoa
    2. The Mode of Revelation (Amos 1:1)
      1. “Which he saw”
      2. Apparently Amos received the message from the Lord by visions.  This can be further demonstrated by the usage of the words saw and seest (Amos 1:1; Amos 7:8; Amos 8:2; Amos 9:1).
    3. The Recipient (Amos 1:1)
      1. The people – “concerning Israel”
      2. The timeframe
        1. During the reign of two kings
          1. Uzziah – King of Judah
          2. Jeroboam – King of Israel
          3. This gives a space of time of approximately 14 to 15 years.
          4. This is when the word of the Lord came to Amos, but does not necessarily mean that this was the entirety of Amos’ ministry.
        2. Two years before the earthquake (Zechariah 14:5)
    4. The Severity of the Message (Amos 1:2)
      1. The Lord will roar from Zion.
        1. Often the word roar and its various forms are connected to a lion.
        2. The roaring of a lion is connected to the wrath of a king (Proverbs 19:12).
        3. The roaring of a lion is connected to the fear of a king (Proverbs 20:2).
        4. Isaiah likens the Lord to a lion roaring on his prey, who is not afraid of many shepherds (Isaiah 31:4).  This same verse makes the connection with the Lord fighting for Zion.
        5. Isaiah likens God’s wrath to a roaring of lion (Isaiah 42:13-15).
        6. This passage is close to a passage found in Joel dealing with the judgment of God upon the heathen and the restoration of Israel (Joel 3:16-20).
        7. It will be the Lion of Juda that will open the book with seven seals in Revelation 5:5.
      2. The habitations of the shepherds shall mourn.
      3. The top of Carmel shall wither.
