Caught by a Rat

Published Date:
July 8, 2006

For years, the scoffers have ridiculed the word of God for saying that Jonah's "great fish" (Jonah 1:17) was a whale (Matthew 12:40).  The problem, according to them, is that modern scientists, hereafter referred to as men of science and precision, do not believe that a whale is a fish even though whales spend their entire lives in the water and resembles a fish!  To them a whale can only be a mammal.  Apparently, if the Lord doesn't use their system for classifying His own creatures, He and His followers are demonstrating gross ignorance of the standard system of animal classification which was invented in the 1700s.

According to a 14 June 2006 Associated Press article on MSNBC's website, men of science and precision have discovered one of God's little creatures alive and well even though they thought these squirrel-like animals were extinct.  They were just slightly off in their calculations.  According to them, this mammal had been extinct for a mere 11 million years.  Now here's the interesting part.  The men of science and precision who discovered this little mammal "nicknamed it the Laotian rock rat."  However, the article notes that it "is not really a rat but a member of a rodent family once known only from fossils."  If these mighty men of science and precision can call an animal a rat, even though it is not a rat according to their own system of classification, then the Lord and His followers ought not to be railed upon for calling a whale a great fish!  To do so would be blatant discrimination and gross hypocrisy!
