Abarim

The name Abarim means regions beyond and refers to regions east of the Jordan River. It refers to a mountain (Numbers 27:12; Deuteronomy 32:49) or a range of mountains (Numbers 33:47-48) in the Eastern Range east of the Dead Sea and lower Jordan in the land of Moab (Numbers 21:11). On the route of the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan (Numbers 27:12), it was the next to the last stop before they crossed the Jordan River (Numbers 33:47-51).

The range offers many commanding views of the land west of the Jordan. They rise from 300 to 600 feet above the plateau and over 4,000 feet above the Dead Sea. From one of the highest of these, called Mount Nebo (Deuteronomy 32:49), Moses surveyed the Promised Land before he died in 1423BC [Reese]. From the manner in which Abarim, Nebo, and Pisgah are connected (Deuteronomy 32:49 with Deuteronomy 34:1), they are evidently different names for the same mountain chain.
