Who Is a Witness?

Who Is a Witness? - Acts 2:32

INTRODUCTION

A witness is one who can testify to the certainty of an event. As such, the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. By doing so, they were declaring the resurrection to be truth. The disciples physically witnessed the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ had been put to death, but was alive and well. Though no believer alive today physically saw the birth, life, death, burial, or resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, that does not prohibit them from testifying to its truthfulness. In order to accurately give witness of the Lord Jesus, an individual must first have experienced the effects of the new birth and have the witness of God indwelling him (1 John 5:10).

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) The apostles were excited to tell about the Lord Jesus (Acts 4:20). They had been with Him. Even though we've never seen Him, Peter said we have something we can trust - the Bible (2 Peter 1:16-21). It is pure and true (Psalm 119:140, 160a). We can tell others about the Lord by using the Bible.
  • Why would it be difficult for an unbeliever to be a good witness for the Lord Jesus Christ? How does this limit the number of witnesses available to speak for the Lord?
  • Though we have not physically seen the resurrected Christ, we can read of Him in the scriptures. How can the scripture lend us authority to be witnesses for the Lord?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to forgive you for failing to witness for Him.
  • Ask the Lord to teach you how to witness.
