What Shall We Teach? - 1 Timothy 4:11
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Paul served as Timothy’s mentor. In fact, Paul referred to Timothy as his “son in the faith” (1 Timothy 1:2Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
See All...). As Timothy’s mentor, Paul gave Timothy truths with the intent that he would pass along those teachings to other believers. Though there are certainly variations of what should be taught, Paul laid out two foundational categories when he mentioned “words of faith and of good doctrine” (1 Timothy 4:6If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
See All...). Though specifics are given in the epistles of First and Second Timothy and Titus, every teaching should reflect the categories set forth by the apostle Paul. Even practical teaching ought to be based upon the words of God, as some teachings are good (2 Thessalonians 2:15Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
See All...), and some are bad (Matthew 15:9But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
See All...). Every teacher should teach with hopes of eventually learning from his students when they too become the teachers.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For children): The prophet Samuel told the children of Israel that he would teach them “the good and the right way” (1 Samuel 12:23Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:
See All...b). God wants us to learn and be able to teach His word. His word is pure and true (Psalm 119:140Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.
See All..., 160). - (For everyone): Through your words and actions, what are you teaching others? Are you teaching them words of faith and good doctrine? Does your teaching help people to have a better walk with the Lord?
- Why is it so important that we check all our teaching against the word of God? What authority does it give a believer to have a Bible verse to back up his or her teaching?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask God to help you teach things that become sound doctrine.
- Ask the Lord to help you change when you are wrong.
