What Shall We Sing? - Colossians 3:16
See All...
INTRODUCTION
God gave us the Bible to serve as our final authority in all matters of faith and practice. This certainly includes the types of songs that should be sung. In fact, the Bible contains an entire book of songs, the Book of Psalms. According to Colossians 3:16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
See All..., the psalms is only one of three categories of songs to be sung by New Testament believers. Basically, psalms are scriptures set to musick, hymns are doctrinal songs speaking specifically of the Lord, and spiritual songs deal with the Christian life and practice. A diligent study of history yields evidence that God’s people have been singing songs from each of these categories since the church’s inception.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For children): It pleases the Lord when we sing His songs to Him. Sing to the Lord while you play or while you clean your room. Sing with your friends, or your family, or by yourself.
- (For everyone): Much of the modern “Christian” musick focuses on self. How is this contrary to the godly categories of musick? Why should God’s people return to godly musick?
- How can we use these categories to check our musick? What should we do if our musick does not fit into any of the categories listed in Colossians 3:16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord for wisdom in singing the right kind of musick.
- Ask God to help you know when your musick is ungodly.
