What Is Sobriety? - 2 Corinthians 5:13
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Many limit sobriety to the absence of alcohol , but scripturally speaking, the meaning is much broader. Sobriety is the opposite of being beside oneself (2 Corinthians 5:13For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause.
See All...) or mad (Acts 26:25But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.
See All...), and is akin to being alert (1 Thessalonians 5:6Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
See All...). The word sober is used in conjunction with the words grave (1 Timothy 3:11Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
See All...; Titus 2:2That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
See All...) and temperate (Titus 1:8But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
See All...; Titus 2:2That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
See All...), indicating that it is accomplished when one is in control, down to earth, and finds the proper balance in his thoughts and actions. One who is sober is humble (Romans 12:3For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
See All...), not drunken (1 Thessalonians 5:7-8 [7] For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
[8] But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
See All...), and well aware of the circumstances that surround him (1 Thessalonians 5:6Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
See All..., 8; 1 Peter 5:8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) No matter what we are doing, God should be in our thoughts. Situations will come up in which we need to pay attention to doing the correct thing (2 Corinthians 10:5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
See All...b; Exodus 23:13And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.
See All...a). How could you be sober when playing with a selfish child; with a sibling who wants to keep playing when you're told it's bedtime? - Why is it important to understand that sobriety is broader than the absence of alcohol? Is it possible for someone who has never had any alcohol to have a problem with sobriety?
- How would you define sobriety? Do you consider yourself to be a sober individual? In what areas of life do you find that the Devil attacks your sobriety?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to help you find sobriety in every aspect of life.
- Ask God to teach you scriptural sobriety.
