What Is Salvation? - Genesis 49:18

What Is Salvation? - Genesis 49:18

INTRODUCTION

The word salvation is used throughout the word of God, but the context and meaning varies from place to place. Failure to understand differences in usage has led many to espouse false doctrines. The foundational meaning of the word salvation is deliverance . The vast majority of occurrences in the word of God has to do with physical deliverance. The word salvation would be used to describe the time when someone received deliverance from a specific trial or a threatening enemy. The most common use among believers today is as the word relates to spiritual deliverance offered through the finished work of Jesus Christ.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) God saves us from many physical dangers daily (Psalm 71:15; i.e., accidents, falls, wrecks, germs). But sin is a heart problem and separates us from God (Mark 7:21-23; Isaiah 59:2). Jesus came to save us from sin (Matthew 1:21).
  • Read Exodus 14:13 and 1 Chronicles 16:35. What is the meaning of the word salvation in each passage? Did this salvation have anything to do with Christ’s death, burial and resurrection?
  • According to 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 people are saved by believing the gospel. The gospel is defined in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. Is this salvation more than physical deliverance?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Thank God for His offer of salvation.
  • Ask the Lord to teach you more about His salvation.

HYMN

He Is Able to Deliver Thee
