What Is Prayer?

What Is Prayer? - Philippians 1:4

INTRODUCTION

Simply stated, prayer is talking to God. Some have suggested that prayer is asking and receiving, but more so it appears to be a making of requests. The Lord connected prayer and the making of requests in our passage. The same connection is made in Philippians 4:6. At the same time, one must confess that prayer is not merely asking and receiving or making requests. The Lord taught that prayer should include a time of praise. When asked by His disciples how they should pray, He began by speaking of the greatness of the Father’s name (Matthew 6:9). Prayer includes a time of request and a time of praise, but overall, it is an act that declares the greatness of God and the frailty of man.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) When we come to God in prayer, we are letting Him know that we depend on Him for all things, whether we need forgiveness for wrongdoing, help in time of trouble, healing when we or others are sick, etc. Our prayer should include praise for Him for He alone has the answers and is able to answer (Psalm 86:7-8, 10).
  • Why is it dangerous for a believer to think of prayer as merely a time of asking or making of requests? How does this tend to selfishness?
  • Why should we spend time in praise when we are praying? What can we do to insure that our praise of the Lord is without dissimulation?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask God to help your times of prayer to be acceptable to Him.
  • Ask the Lord to teach you more about prayer.
