What Is Nakedness? - 2 Corinthians 5:3
See All...
INTRODUCTION
At first glance, this passage appears to be less expressive than many others which cover a wider range of study. After all, a single reading of our passage proves that nakedness is the opposite of being clothed or covered. This truth is confirmed by other similar passages as well (Leviticus 18:6None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.
See All...; Job 24:7They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold.
See All...; Isaiah 58:7Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
See All...). However, this subject is much more complicated than merely whether someone is covered or not. It is important to understand the full context. For example, is nakedness the failure to cover every part of the body or are there parts of the body considered secret or private (Isaiah 3:17Therefore the LORD will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts.
See All...)? Though there are certainly other secret or private parts, the Lord plainly declared that uncovering the legs and thighs was nakedness (Isaiah 47:1-3 [1] Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.
[2] Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.
[3] Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.
See All...). For this reason, the priests were told to wear breeches to cover these parts under their priestly attire (Exodus 28:42And thou shalt make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach:
See All...).
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For children): A baby is born wearing nothing (Job 1:21And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
See All...a). The Bible calls this nakedness. Wearing clothing looking like undergarments in front of others is also nakedness. Read what Peter did when he was fishing and knew the Lord was on the shore (John 21:7Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.
See All...). - (For everyone): If failure to cover certain parts of our body is considered nakedness, what should we do? Should we be ashamed if we fail to cover those parts?
- The Lord should have the ultimate say in what we wear and what we cover. Does He have authority in this area of your life? Could He convict you about what you wear?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to give you a willing heart to conform to His will.
- Ask God to teach you how to dress in a way that pleases Him.
