INTRODUCTION

The Bible refers to both a godly and ungodly fear. The two fears will not and cannot coexist. Godly fear pertains to the healthy fear involving fearing the Lord (Isaiah 8:13Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
See All...); however, ungodly fear pertains to fearing the things of this world (Isaiah 8:12Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.
See All...). Ungodly fear opposes faith and can grievously effect a person (Job 4:14Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.
See All...; Job 22:10Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;
See All...; Psalm 48:6Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.
See All...; 1 John 4:18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
See All...), but the fear of the Lord is founded upon faith and provides confidence and assurance. The fear of this world brings torment upon its victims, yet the fear of the Lord prolongs life (Proverbs 10:27The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
See All...). Not surprisingly, the world thrives on triggering ungodly fears, especially its entertainment and news programs. God’s people should avoid the worldly and major on the fear of the Lord.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

• (For children): To fear something is to be afraid of it. Memorize Psalm 56:3What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
  See All... and quote it when you are afraid. Also, try singing songs like “Jesus Loves Me.” Always remember that we are weak but "He is strong."
• (For everyone):  What causes you to fear? Are you afraid of the dark, of people, of death, or of possible troubles? How does this fear generally affect you? Do your fears cause you to draw closer to the Lord?
• What are some differences between the fear of God and ungodly fears? How does each fear change your life? Which one is pleasing to the Lord and why is it pleasing to Him?

PRAYER NEEDS

• Ask the Lord to give you the faith to overcome the fears of this world.
• Ask God to give you a holy fear of Himself.
