Watch Ye
See All...
INTRODUCTION
In Bible times, cities would often build towers to be used for the purpose of watching the gate in case of danger from without (Isaiah 21:8And he cried, A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon the watchtower in the daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights:
See All...). Watchmen would take turns on duty watching the gate and were responsible to sound a trumpet if any danger was in sight (Ezekiel 33:6But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.
See All...). The apostle Paul took the literal act and gave it a spiritual application. Just as cities needed men who would be willing to stay awake or be alert while others were asleep or busy in their daily routines, churches need believers who are willing to be sober and watchful while others might be cumbered about with the cares of this world. Today’s watchmen must be willing to use their voices like a trumpet when danger is nigh.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) You would warn someone if they were about to fall over an object they didn't see because they weren't paying attention. God's people can take spiritual falls by not paying attention to God's word and by doing things God doesn't like. We should be willing to warn them with the word of God.
- The pronoun ye is plural. When Paul said, "Watch ye," to whom was he speaking? Why is it important that we realize Paul was speaking to a group of believers rather than an individual?
- Why does your church, family, and community need you to be a watchman? Are there some people in each group who are sleeping in a time of danger? What should you do?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to make you a faithful watchman.
- Ask the Lord to give you a better understanding of watching.
