Trusting in Worldly Safety
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Though the means of worldly safety have changed throughout time, people have always put their trust in various means of safety. In Bible times, people trusted in "fenced walls" (Deuteronomy 28:52And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

[3] Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.

See All...), and mountains (Amos 6:1Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
See All...). Now, people have come to place their trust in weapons, security systems, government, insurance policies, and medicine. Though the sources of trust have changed, the Lord is still just as grieved when men cast their trust upon the things of this world. Ultimately, every source of worldly safety will fail, often in the moment of greatest need.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) When outnumbered by the Philistines, Jonathan trusted God completely and was going to attack a certain camp (1 Samuel 14:6And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.

Elisha told his servant to trust God when surrounded by enemies (2 Kings 6:15-17 [15] And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? [16] And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. [17] And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
See All...). Safety is of the Lord (Psalm 112:7He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.
See All...). - In what ways do you trust this world for safety? Who should you trust in times of war, danger, sickness, chaos, or inclement weather? What are the chances of the Lord failing you?
- Why does it displease the Lord when His people put their trust in this world for safety? How many people have had to find out the hard way that this world cannot be trusted?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to help you see that He is faithful.
- Ask God to show you the inability of the world to offer safety.
