Trusting in Vanity - Job 15:31
See All...
INTRODUCTION
When man trusts in nothing, he receives nothing in return. That is the primary point of Job 15:31Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
See All.... Yet, that is not the only truth being taught. It is also true that people should not trust in anything of little to no value. This would include beauty (Ezekiel 16:15But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.
See All...; Proverbs 31:30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
See All...) and riches (Psalm 62:10Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.
See All...). Unfortunately, many in this world have become accustomed to trust in their intellect, beauty, and riches. The end result is borne out in the entertainment and business worlds, but the seeds of this troubling problem usually begin in early childhood. Young people often hear the emphasis placed upon their appearance or education as the primary means of getting the things that these young people want most in life.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For children): In his own heart, Paul thought he was serving God (Proverbs 28:26He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
See All...) by trying to do good works and keep God’s laws. He was wrong (Psalm 39:5Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.
See All...). The law points us to Christ (Galatians 3:24Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
See All...). Paul realized this later when he got saved (Philippians 3:4-7 [4] And his brightness was as the light; he had horns coming out of his hand: and there was the hiding of his power. [5] Before him went the pestilence, and burning coals went forth at his feet. [6] He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting. [7] I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction: and the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.
See All...). - (For everyone): Do you, in any way, trust in your beauty to get what you want? Do you do this with family, friends, or at work? What true blessings have you received by trusting in vanity?
- What are some other vain things in which people might trust? How do those things bring false results? How does this hurt us over time?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to help you realize when you are trusting in vanity.
- Ask God to show you that He is the only One worthy of our trust.
