Though Hand Join in Hand
See All...
INTRODUCTION
People unite over various causes. Some of those causes are righteous and some are not. Unity based upon a righteous cause pleases the Lord and leads to righteous acts, but unity based upon ungodly or carnal causes grieves the Lord and leads to much wickedness. After the flood, the Lord commanded that Noah and his family should "replenish the earth" (Genesis 9:1And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
See All...). The Lord wanted them to spread out and replenish the earth, but immediately, Noah and his family settled together and "Noah began to be an husbandman" (Genesis 9:20And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:
See All...). This may seem insignificant, but it was only the precursor to the unified desire in Genesis 11:4And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
See All... to build "a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven."
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) Mark 2:1-12 [1] And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.
[2] And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.
[3] And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.
[4] And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
[5] When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
[6] But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
[7] Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?
[8] And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
[9] Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
[10] But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
[11] I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
[12] And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.
See All... tells of four men who worked together for the purpose of bringing their sick friend to the Lord. The Lord forgave the sick man's sins and healed him. He is pleased when we work with other believers to do what is right. - How did the Lord feel about the tower of Babel (see Genesis 11:1-9 [1] And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
[2] And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
[3] And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
[4] And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
[5] And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
[6] And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
[7] Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
[8] So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
[9] Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
See All...)? Why was the Lord displeased with the unity of the people? What came of their unity? - When did the language barrier between cultures begin? Why did the Lord confound the languages? What does this suggest about the Lord’s desire, or lack thereof, for world unity?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to help you find unity only in righteous causes.
- Ask God to guide you to others with whom you may be unified.
