They Will Not Endure Sound Doctrine - 2 Timothy 4:3

They Will Not Endure Sound Doctrine - 2 Timothy 4:3

INTRODUCTION

The apostle Paul warned about a time when people would no longer endure sound doctrine, but based upon their lusts would seek after teachers who turned them unto fables. Perhaps the most dangerous thing is that people often teach things contrary to the truth, while using the truth as a source. Many have been turned away from the truth in the name of truth. How many Bible teachers have created fables based upon verses of scripture only to become the authority at the expense of the Bible. The beginnings of such a tragedy may be subtle, but in the end, people seek after teachers rather than scripture. This is why Paul admonished Timothy to "Preach the word" (2 Timothy 4:2).

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) People do not like God's word because it tells them they need to be saved and do what God wants. Consider these different reactions of those who did not want to hear God's word: Psalm 50:17; Jeremiah 5:31; Jeremiah 36:21-25; Acts 7:54-57.
  • If the source of both sound doctrine and fables is the same, how can we know the difference between the two? What can you do to ensure that you are not led away from the truth?
  • Paul warned that people would seek teachers rather than scripture. Is this happening today? Has it happened to you? Where is you allegiance? Who is your authority?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to help you endure sound doctrine.
  • Ask the Lord to help you seek scripture over teachers.
