There Is No Rest - Psalm 38:1-11
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Sin cripples a man in every way. It hides God’s face (Isaiah 59:2But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
See All...) and withholds good things from man he would otherwise enjoy (Jeremiah 5:25Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.
See All...). Instead of peace, joy, and blessings, sin brings unrest, frustration, and heartaches. Perhaps no passage better depicts this than the 38th psalm. According to the psalm, sin robbed David’s bones of rest (Psalm 38:3There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.
See All...). Sin troubled him and caused him to "go mourning all the day long" (Psalm 38:6I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.
See All...). It brought disquietness to David’s heart, which caused him to roar (Psalm 38:8I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.
See All...). It caused his heart to pant and his strength to fail (Psalm 38:10My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.
See All...). Though some things vary, sin always works to rob men of the good things God has for them to enjoy.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) God punished His people for their continued disobedience and it wasn't pleasant (Ezekiel 39:23And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
See All...; Deuteronomy 28:63-67 [63] And it shall come to pass, that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it. [64] And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. [65] And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: [66] And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life: [67] In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.
See All...). Learn a lesson from Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived (Proverbs 13:15Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.
See All...; Ecclesiastes 2:26For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
See All...). - The pleasures of sin are for "a season" (Hebrews 11:25Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
See All...). Read Isaiah 48:22There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked.
See All... and Isaiah 57:21There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.
See All.... What happens after the season of enjoyment passes? - Name some people in scripture who were robbed of good things because of their sins. What are some things that were lost? What can you learn from this truth?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask God to show you the consequences of sin.
- Confess your sins to God. Perhaps He will restore what is lost.
