The Wisdom of Wise Counsel - Proverbs 1:5

The Wisdom of Wise Counsel - Proverbs 1:5

INTRODUCTION

Though not all counsel received will be wise counsel, it is still wise to receive counsel. A foolish man neglects to consider the need for counsel. He believes his own understanding sufficient (Proverbs 12:15). A wise man, however, not only seeks counsel, but hearkens to the wisdom found in such. The Bible says that the absence of counsel causes people to fall (Proverbs 11:14) and purposes to be disappointed (Proverbs 15:22; Proverbs 20:18), and that only a fool would go to war without it (Proverbs 24:6). Not only does counsel help to develop godly plans, but also ensures that our motives are pure. Counsel provides safety on a variety of levels (Proverbs 11:14; Proverbs 24:6).

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For children): God sent a prophet to tell Amaziah not to worship idols. Amaziah told the prophet to leave him alone or he would have him killed. The prophet then told Amaziah of his destruction (2 Chronicles 25:14-16). Amaziah should have listened to good counsel.
  • (For everyone):  Do you have important decisions to make? Have you considered seeking counsel from someone who loves the Lord and knows His word?
  • Do you find yourself seeking counsel only from people who would agree with your plans? Why is that so? Is it possible that you seek to justify your actions rather than truly desiring God's will and ways.

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to help you see the importance of wise counsel.
  • Ask the Lord to give you counsel that checks your motive.
