The Wife Shall Honour Her Husband - Esther 1:20

The Wife Shall Honour Her Husband - Esther 1:20

INTRODUCTION

The Bible shows us that even heathen kings know it is proper for a woman to honour her husband. Some might suggest that because these words were spoken by a heathen, the reader should discount them, but these truths are supported elsewhere in scripture. For instance, Ephesians 5:33 says that the wife is to reverence her husband. Sara honoured Abraham, even to the point of calling him lord (1 Peter 3:6). Even Abigail, who had a husband that was a man of Belial, honoured her husband when she kept David from ending Nabal’s life (1 Samuel 25:23-33). A woman who honours her husband honours the Lord. She does so because the Lord commands it, not because her husband necessarily deserves her honour.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For children): Honour means to treat with respect. God made the woman to be a help to her husband (Genesis 2:18). As such, she will do him good all the days of her life (Proverbs 31:12). This includes both her actions and her speech.
  • (For everyone): What kind of a man was Nabal? How could Abigail honour him when he was so wicked? What would have caused her to be a good wife to a bad man?
  • If you are a wife, do you honour your husband? What kind of message does this send to your children? How does this please or displease the Lord?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to make your home more scriptural.
  • Ask God to help each member of your family to please Him.
