The Sin of Gluttony - Proverbs 23:19-21
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Gluttony is one of the most misunderstood sins in the Bible. It is often suggested that gluttony is the sin of over-eating. However, the built-in dictionary of the Bible suggests otherwise. The drunkard from Proverbs 23:21For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
See All... is defined as a winebibber in Proverbs 23:20Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
See All.... At the same time, the glutton in Proverbs 23:21For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
See All... is defined as a riotous eater of flesh in Proverbs 23:20Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
See All.... It is not the amount of food, but the manner in which the food is eaten that makes a man a glutton. The fact that gluttony is mentioned with drunkenness every time only further confirms this truth (Deuteronomy 21:20And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.
See All...; Proverbs 23:21For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
See All...; Matthew 11:19The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
See All...; Luke 7:34The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
See All...; the last two being false accusations against the Saviour).
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) God meant for you to enjoy eating and drinking (Ecclesiastes 5:18Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.
See All...). It needs to be done for the right reason (Ecclesiastes 10:17Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
See All...). God brings judgment when we don't eat and drink for the right reason (Exodus 32:6-8 [6] And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. [7] And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: [8] They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
See All..., 19-20, 26-28). - Read 1 Corinthians 10:31Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
See All.... What does this suggest about the importance of diet? How can a person eat to the glory of God? - Individuals should be careful about the amount of food they eat, but not because of fear of being gluttonous. From the scripture, what is the scene in which someone would be gluttonous?
