The Selfless Woman - Proverbs 31:25-27
See All...
INTRODUCTION
No one exemplifies selflessness in the home like the wife and mother. Her life is one of sacrifice, often putting the needs and wants of her household ahead of her own. She labours to take care of her family (Proverbs 31:16-19 [16] She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
[17] She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
[18] She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.
[19] She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
See All...). She looks well to the ways of her household, while enjoying little to no idle time (Proverbs 31:27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
See All...). Yet at the end of the day, she rises up to give meat to her household (Proverbs 31:15She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
See All...). All the while, she can open her mouth with wisdom with the law of kindness in her tongue (Proverbs 31:26She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
See All...). Her only reward is the praise of her husband and children (Proverbs 31:28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
See All...). This reward may seem insignificant to the world, but to her it is enough.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) Name some things your mother does for you from the time you get up until you go to bed. A godly mother always has something to do: takes care of the home (Titus 2:5To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
See All...); teaches and brings up children (Proverbs 31:1The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.
See All...; 1 Timothy 5:10Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.
See All...); guides the home (1 Timothy 5:14I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
See All...); comforts her children (Isaiah 66:13As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
See All...). - Consider the actions of the two women in 1 Kings 3:26Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
See All.... Which one exemplified a godly love for the child? Does the wife and mother in your home exemplify this kind of selflessness? -
What was Moses’ mother willing to sacrifice to insure Moses’ well being (Exodus 2:3And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink.
See All...)? What are you willing to sacrifice for the sake of those in your household?
