INTRODUCTION

Chastening is indicative of a parent-child relationship (Deuteronomy 8:5Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.

As such, God’s chastening, at least as recorded in the New Testament, is intended for those He calls His sons (1 John 3:2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
See All...). God chastens His people, not for the sake of justice, but for the sake of strengthening and correcting them. Punishment is not valid for the believer because the sins of believers have been accounted for through the shed blood of Christ, but believers still require chastening in order to conform them more to the image of Christ. A lost man needs punishment or salvation, but chastening is reserved for sons.

• (For smaller children) Children need to be taught the truth so they can choose between good and evil (1 Peter 2:2As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

  See All...). When you choose the wrong, you need to be corrected, but you are still a part of your family and very much loved. Consider these verses and be grateful Dad and Mom care: Proverbs 22:15Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
