The Purpose of Power

The Purpose of Power - Acts 1:8

INTRODUCTION

Many Bible teachers have become consumed with the powers demonstrated by the apostles. These teachers instruct believers to seek the same power that was bestowed upon Peter and Paul. A careful study of the scriptures demonstrates that the motive in this teaching is misplaced. The power given to the apostles was given for the purpose of assisting them in telling a lost and dying world about a risen Saviour. Much of the modern teaching is centered on pride and encourages a selfish Christianity, but the biblical power given to the apostles was meant to strengthen their witness to others. Modern Christianity focuses on self, while biblical Christianity focuses on the Saviour and others.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Paul said he could do anything the Lord wanted him to do because Christ would give him strength (Philippines 4:13). God wanted him to witness (Acts 9:15). God gave him the power (1 Thessalonians 1:5a; 1 Corinthians 2:4-5).
  • Though there are some differences in the manifestation of power from God, believers should still seek power from the Lord to witness to others. Why is this power important?
  • Why are we dependent upon the Lord for help in witnessing? How successful will our methods of evangelism be without the power of God?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to give you His power when witnessing.
  • Thank the Lord for the times He has helped you to witness.
