The Proofs of Chastening - Hebrews 12:6-8
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Chastening is not merely a means of judgment implemented by the Lord for wrongdoing, but is a proof of sonship. According to Hebrews 12:6For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
See All..., every son received of the Lord will, at some point in his life, experience the chastening hand of the Lord. Any individual who is able to do wrong without receiving of God’s chastening should carefully examine whether or not he is in the faith. The absence of chastening, in and of itself, suggests that a person is not a son of God (Hebrews 12:8But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
See All...). Just as a good father will not allow his son to get away with wrong doing, God the Father refuses to allow His children to do wrong without suffering any consequences.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) When we get saved, we become sons of God (John 1:12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
See All...). God chastens us out of love because we are sons (Proverbs 3:11-12 [11] My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: [12] For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
See All...). - How can someone become a son of God? What is the eternal destination of someone who is born again? Why is it a blessing that the Lord offers proofs of sonship for the believer?
- Upon what is God’s chastening based (Revelation 3:19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
See All...)? What should we gather from the fact that God chastens us when we sin against His law?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to show you His love through chastening.
- Thank God for caring enough to correct you when wrong.
