The Origin of Singing

The Origin of Singing - Job 38:4-7

INTRODUCTION

Rarely does man have the opportunity to participate in heavenly activity while on earth. Singing is one of those times. In Job 38, the Bible sheds light on some of the events surrounding creation. According to Job 38:7, "the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy." These spiritual beings saw the creation of God and could not help but burst into song. Though singing has often been used in unholy ways, its origins are heavenly. Not only are its origins heavenly, but long after the world has sung its last song, heaven will still be enjoying God’s gift of musick (Revelation 5:9). With these things being true, God’s people ought to enjoy this heavenly benefit as oft as possible.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) The heavenly beings rejoiced over God's creation. We have something more beautiful than that to sing about. Salvation is the beginning of our walk with God and there is no end to it (Psalm 95:1-3; Isaiah 61:10). Sing Thank You, Lord .
  • What are some other heavenly activities that believers can enjoy while on earth? How do these activities offer praise unto the Lord? How often do you participate in these acts of worship?
  • In what areas has the world corrupted musick? How has the world specifically corrupted the act of singing? What can God’s people do to insure singing is done in a godly manner?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to help you enjoy singing unto Him.
  • Ask God to help you see the idolatry of singing worldly musick.
