The Names of God
What is the name of God? Did God reveal his name to us. He has so many names throughout the bible and I wonder what name are we supposed to call Him and why?
I guess the easiest answer to your question is that names in the Bible have meanings. Many times, those names are connected to a person’s character or personality. I’ll give you an example: Naomi is a person from the Book of Ruth. Her name means “pleasant.” No doubt she was a sweet, pleasant woman. However, she went through a time of great sorrow and trouble. It was during this time that she requested that her name be changed to Mara which means “bitter.”
The Lord’s many names, I think, emphasize His character and His person as well. It is a way for us to comprehend (at least in a limited way) the eternal God. Consider the following names of God and their connection to who He is and what He can do for His people:
- Isaiah 57:15For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
See All... For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. - Exodus 34:14For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:
See All... For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: - Exodus 6:3And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.
See All... And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. - Isaiah 9:6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
See All... For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. - Matthew 1:23Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
See All... Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. - Matthew 1:21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
See All... And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. - Revelation 19:16And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
See All... And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
As you know, this list could go on and on with all of the precious names our wonderful Lord. Just composing a list of the names of God is a blessing for it makes us “consider Him.”
As far as what name you choose to call Him is dependent upon what trait, attribute, or characteristic you want to emphasize. If you want to thank Him for salvation, you might call Him Saviour, Redeemer, or some other name that emphasizes the fact that He is the “author of eternal salvation” (Hebrews 5:9And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
See All...).
If you are talking about His authority and power, you might use God Almighty or KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Again, all of those names have importance and significance and deserve our attention. I wouldn’t minimize any of them for they all reveal something about Him.
I know that I only skimmed the surface of the importance and meanings of the names of God.
