The Kindness of David - 2 Samuel 9:1-13
See All...
INTRODUCTORY THOUGHTS
The Bible records Jonathan and David's strikingly close friendship like that of siblings. Regardless of this cherished relationship, Jonathan's father, king Saul, feared and despised David. Both king Saul and his son died during battle, thus paving the way for David to ascend to the throne of Israel. Once David became king, he sought for an opportunity to show kindness to any of Jonathan’s remaining family members. After searching through the land, it was discovered that Saul and Jonathan had one remaining descendent (Mephibosheth). David sent for Mephibosheth and told him his intentions of showing him the kindness normally reserved for a member of the king's family. This act of kindness included the restoration of his family’s property. David’s kindness also made provision for Mephibosheth to eat at the king’s table (2 Samuel 9:7And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For children) The Bible tells us that God is kind to everyone. He gives them sunshine and rain and many other good things. We should be like God and be kind toward others.
- (For everyone) If Saul had done right as the king, it is possible that Mephibosheth as his grandson could have sat on the throne. Instead, he was lame (crippled) and likely poor and without a throne. What do you think that the kindness of David meant to him?
- This study again displayed the connection between kindness and family. How did David's kindness show that he was willing to treat Mephibosheth as family?
PRAYER THOUGHTS
- Ask the Lord to put some people in your life to whom you can show kindness.
- Ask the Lord to teach you how to show kindness toward others.
