The Godhead at Work in Prayer

The Godhead at Work in Prayer

John 16:23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

INTRODUCTORY THOUGHTS

The 2,000-year history of the church reveals that there have been teachers and whole religions who have rejected the biblical teaching of the coexistence of a Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Others have accepted their existence but rejected the fact that these three are one with each being fully God (1 John 5:7). Some have simply been unable to comprehend or unwilling to accept that God could exist as one God in three persons. Regardless of man’s intellectual inadequacies, the Bible reveals that each member of the Godhead works together on our behalf in prayer. The Lord told us that every believer should pray to God the Father in the name of the Lord Jesus (John 15:16). The prayers are directed toward the Father with the Son acting as the mediator (Hebrews 7:25). The book of Romans further reveals that the Spirit of God makes intercession for us in our prayers (Romans 8:26).

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

(For children): God’s people need assistance in praying to God the Father. When we sin, God the Son presents us faultless (as if we had never sinned) to the Father because He paid the penalty for that sin (1 John 2:1-2; Jude 24). God the Holy Ghost intercedes on our behalf by taking our words and making them acceptable for the Father to hear.

(For everyone): Why is it so important for God’s people to pray according to the manner in which the scriptures prescribe? What will happen if we are disobedient in our prayer life?

(For everyone): Why do we need the Spirit to make intercession for us? Why do we need the Son to act as our mediator? What does this teach us about our frailty and the grace of God?

PRAYER THOUGHTS

Thank the Lord for His help in your prayer life.

Thank God for the access He has provided through His Son.
