The Foundation for Rebuking
See All...
INTRODUCTION
The apostle Paul knew, that as a minister of the gospel, there would be times that Timothy would have to rebuke or correct others. However, Timothy was not to rebuke others on a whim. In fact, Paul specifically laid out two premises by which Timothy should rebuke others, "with all longsuffering and doctrine." Timothy was to rebuke others while suffering with them for a long time. He was to demonstrate grace in allowing others time to rectify the areas of failure. At the same time, he was not to rebuke others based upon opinion, but with sound doctrine. This was going to be necessary as some would begin to depart from sound doctrine and practice (2 Timothy 4:3-4 [3] For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
[4] And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) You are playing with a sibling or friend when his mother calls him. He just keeps playing. You need to remind him of Colossians 3:20Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
See All.... It may happen another time. Remind him again. Keep doing this until he learns to come quickly. - Why is it important that we rebuke others "with all longsuffering"? How will it hinder the working of God in the lives of others when we fail to rebuke with longsuffering?
- Do you rebuke others based upon your opinion or based upon the eternal words of God? What happens when we rebuke without the authority of God’s word?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask God to help you be gracious when you must rebuke others.
- Ask God to give you a scriptural foundation for your rebukes.
