The Form of Prayer
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Prayer is an important subject that has unfortunately been tainted by the traditions of men. Some teach that in order to pray one must bow his head and close his eyes, while others add that one must also kneel in order to properly pray. The Bible teaches no such commands. In fact, in Bible times, prayer was often made by the lifting up of hands (Psalm 141:2Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

In other places, we find that believers might kneel and lift up their hands (1 Kings 8:54And it was so, that when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication unto the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven.

See All...). However, the most important thing is not the position of the body, but that men call upon the name of the Lord.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) God deserves our full attention when we pray. As children, it is best for us to close our eyes so we aren't tempted to look around and have no objects in our hands with which to play. Folding our hands will keep us from touching another child in a group setting when someone is leading in prayer.
- What dangers exist by putting the emphasis of prayer upon the bodily positions implemented? Is it more important to pray with a humble heart or in a humble position?
- Though a bodily position of humility is not necessary, in what ways could it be helpful in prayer? How could closing your eyes and bowing your head be helpful as you pray?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask God to help you approach Him with a humble heart.
- Ask the Lord to teach you to pray according to the scriptures.
