The Expectation of Sobriety - Titus 2:1-6
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Sobriety is not a special requirement expected from an elite group of believers, rather, it is the expectation God has for all who have called upon the name of the Lord. Certainly God expects sobriety from the leaders in the New Testament church (1 Timothy 3:2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
See All..., 11; Titus 1:8But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
See All...), but He also expects it from the women (1 Timothy 2:9In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
See All...), the aged men (Titus 2:2That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
See All...), the young women (Titus 2:4That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
See All...), and the young men (Titus 2:6Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
See All...). No group is exempt! If this were not enough, the apostle Paul made an open appeal for sobriety to all believers collectively (1 Thessalonians 5:6Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
See All..., 8; Titus 2:12Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
See All...). Simon Peter seemed a bit more adamant when he demanded sobriety from his audience (1 Peter 4:7But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
See All...; 1 Peter 5:8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) As children, Samuel's and Timothy's thoughts were on the Lord (1 Samuel 2:11And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before Eli the priest.
See All...b, 18, 26; 2 Timothy 3:15And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
See All...). As a boy, Jesus thought soberly (Luke 2:49And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
See All...). How can you be sober at home, at church, at the store? - Why is sobriety important for young men? Why would it be important for young women? Why is sobriety crucial for the aged men? What about the older ladies?
- What specific issues are you currently facing that would be greatly helped by your possession of sobriety? What troubles could come if you fail to be sober in mind and in deed?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask God to impress upon your heart that He requires sobriety.
- Ask the Lord to show you the benefits of sobriety.
