The Discernment of the Hypocrite - Matthew 16:1-3

The Discernment of the Hypocrite - Matthew 16:1-3

INTRODUCTION

The hypocrite has a tremendous amount of discernment in certain areas of life, but he lacks discernment in other areas where he needs it the most. As such, a hypocrite readily recognizes problems in others, but is blind to some of the same inadequacies in his own life. Though some might be quick to accuse the hypocrite of merely ignoring his own problems, it is quite often true that he cannot discern the presence of these problems when they appear in his own life. Perhaps this is due to the blinding work of Satan. Satan has no problem when a man finds fault in others, as long as that man never finds fault in himself. Without God’s help, the hypocrite will never discern his hypocrisy.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) God sent the prophet Nathan to tell king David a story about a rich man who had wronged a poor man. David became angry and judged the rich man. God was using the story to help David confess his own sin (2 Samuel 12:1-7a).
  • How easy is it for you to find fault in others? What are some areas in which you have problems? Is it easier for you to see the problems in others?
  • What are some areas in which you see problems in others, all the while you are guilty of the same? Are you harder on yourself or on others?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to help you repent of your own problems.
  • Ask God to give you grace in dealing with others.
