The Character of a Steward

The Character of a Steward

Titus 1:7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

INTRODUCTORY THOUGHTS

Every trustworthy steward must possess a high level of moral character. This is demonstrated in the qualifications of a bishop. As a steward of God, he must not be self-willed. He must recognize that his life and his possessions are not his own. In addition to this, he must not be easily distracted, overcome by anger, wine, fightings, or money. Each of these issues affects the individual’s ability to think and rationally behave. As a steward, a man must dedicate himself to a high level of character and morality. After all, the definition of the steward means that he has been entrusted not with his own work or possessions but with those of his master. As stewards of God, believers must not allow themselves to become distracted from the task at hand, always properly caring for the things of God.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

(For children):Noah’s testimony remained proper and true in the midst of a godless world. While he was building the ark, he preached to the people to get right with God. He remained true to God and subsequently saved his family from the impending doom (Genesis 6:5-9; Genesis 7:1-7).

(For everyone):What if you were hiring someone to care for your most prized possessions? What kind of traits would be most important to you? What would be the most important things to consider before offering to hire the individual?

(For everyone):What are some character flaws you have that might hinder you as a steward of God? What should you do to fix those and make them right?

PRAYER THOUGHTS

Ask the Lord to prepare you to be a better steward for Him.

Ask God to show you any areas in which you need to repent.
