INTRODUCTION

As believers, we have a God given responsibility in the area of hospitality. In two places we find the phrase "given to hospitality" (Romans 12:13Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
See All...; 1 Timothy 3:2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
See All...). The passage in 1 Timothy speaks of the qualifications of a bishop, but the passage in Romans identifies hospitality as a responsibility for all believers. We should be "given to hospitality." In Titus 1:8But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
See All..., we find that a bishop must be "a lover of hospitality." Just as with the command to be "given to hospitality," it is God’s will that every believer be "a lover of hospitality." It ought to be our joy and our purpose to spend time with others, desiring to strengthen or encourage them in some area of need.

• (For smaller children) Elisha passed through Shunem often and was urged by a godly woman to eat with her and her husband as he passed through. She also saw the need for Elisha to have a place to stay and they made him a room of his own in the house (2 Kings 4:8-10 [8] And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. [9] And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. [10] Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

• Why is it important for a pastor or a bishop to be "given to" and "a lover of hospitality"? Why would it also be helpful to have other believers within a congregation who are hospitable?
