Temptations Are Not the Same - Genesis 22:1
See All...
INTRODUCTION
When a believer thinks of temptation, he often thinks of something sinful. Though this may be the most common form of temptation in scripture, it is certainly not the only kind. There is no doubt that God tempted Abraham, yet this temptation was not unto sin, but was a test of Abraham’s faith. In a very basic sense, temptation is the trying of one’s faith. This connection is clear in James 1:2-3 [2] My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
[3] Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
See All... where the words temptations and trying are used interchangeably. At times, the author, the purpose, and the circumstances surrounding temptations will vary, but the underlying premise remains the same. It is of the utmost importance that each believer learn to discern the details when tempted.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) Psalm 11:5The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.
See All... says, "The Lord trieth the righteous." Job knew he was being tried as he had done nothing worthy of losing all his possessions and health (Job 1:1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
See All...; Job 23:10But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
See All...). God was showing Satan what kind of man Job was. Satan hoped Job would sin, but he did not (Job 1:11But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
See All..., 22; Job 2:5But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
See All..., 9-10). - Why is it important for believers to study the various details of temptation? How could this study help believers find victory in times of temptation?
- Have you ever been tempted? What was the source of the temptation? Were you able to get victory, or did you fall into sin? What could you have done differently?
PRAYER NEEDS
