Tarrying Long at the Wine - Proverbs 23:29-30

Tarrying Long at the Wine - Proverbs 23:29-30

INTRODUCTION

The world has presented the drinking of alcohol as a pleasurable thing, but the Bible presents a much different picture. Alcohol controls men. Isaiah 5:11 says, "Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!" Drinking may begin as a supposed onetime thing, but that is not the end. The end desire of alcohol is that it will consume a person from the moment he awakes, until he drinks himself to sleep at night. The physical effects of this practice are contentions, babbling, and redness of eyes, but it also brings woe, sorrow, and wounds without cause.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) A person who is addicted to alcohol cannot live without it. Proverbs 23:35 presents a sad story as does Isaiah 56:12. God doesn't want sin to control you (Romans 6:12). He wants you to allow Him to be in control of your life (Romans 6:22).
  • Would you ever start drinking if you knew the possibility existed that you would get to the point where you had to drink from the moment you woke up until you went to bed at night?
  • Do you know someone that sins in partaking of alcohol? Have you noticed the woe, sorrow, and contentions that have afflicted him or her because of the alcohol?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Thank God for joy and peace.
  • Pray for those you know who have submitted to alcohol.
