The Healing of Naaman

INTRODUCTION: This is a story of deliverance from leprosy and is a picture of salvation. It is also a story of how God uses many people to get one person healed.

  1. THE FAILING REVIEW (2 Kings 5:1-8)
    1. Naaman’s Condition (2 Kings 5:1)
      1. The good
        1. He was a captain of the host of the king of Syria.
        2. He was a great man with his master.
        3. He was honourable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance.
        4. He was a mighty man in valour.
      2. The bad – He was a leper.
    2. Naaman’s Chance (2 Kings 5:2-5)
      1. The testimony of a captive maid (2 Kings 5:2-4)
        1. Her situation (2 Kings 5:2)
          1. Taken captive from Israel
          2. Waiting on Naaman’s wife
        2. Her testimony (2 Kings 5:3) – to her mistress
        3. Her faith (2 Kings 5:3)
        4. Her word (2 Kings 5:4)
          1. Carried by another
          2. Went to her master
      2. The encouragement of a pagan king (2 Kings 5:5)
        1. He encouraged him to go.
        2. He wrote him a letter.
        3. He sent him with a reward.
          1. Ten talents of silver
          2. 6,000 pieces of gold
          3. Ten changes of raiment
        4. Never underestimate what God may use to reach someone for Himself.
    3. Naaman’s Confusion (2 Kings 5:6-8)
      1. He went to the wrong person (2 Kings 5:6); the king of Israel.
        1. He came to the king of Israel with his letter.
        2. He expected the king of Israel to heal his leprosy.
      2. He left the wrong impression (2 Kings 5:7).
        1. That he expected the king to do the work of God
        2. That he sought for a quarrel with Israel
      3. He has to be redirected to the man of God (2 Kings 5:8).
        1. No need for the king to rend his clothes
        2. Send Naaman to the man of God.
        3. Naaman shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.
  2. THE FILTHY RIVER (2 Kings 5:9-14)
    1. Elisha’s Message (2 Kings 5:9-10)
      1. Naaman arrived at Elisha’s house (2 Kings 5:9).
        1. He came with horses and chariot.
        2. He stood at the door of the house.
      2. Elisha gave the word of God to Naaman (2 Kings 5:10).
        1. By way of a messenger
        2. To go and wash seven times in the Jordan River
    2. Naaman’s Anger (2 Kings 5:11-12)
      1. His reaction – He went away wroth (2 Kings 5:11).
      2. His expectation (2 Kings 5:11) – I thought.
        1. He would come out to me.
        2. He would strike his hand over the place.
        3. He would recover him of his leprosy.
      3. His comparison (2 Kings 5:12)
        1. The filthy Jordan
        2. The clean rivers of Abana and Pharpar
    3. Naaman’s Obedience (2 Kings 5:13-14)
      1. The testimony of his servants (2 Kings 5:13)
        1. He would have done some great thing.
        2. He might as well do the lowly thing.
      2. The healing of Naaman’s leprosy (2 Kings 5:14)
        1. He dipped seven times in the Jordan.
        2. He was cleansed of his leprosy.
        3. His flesh became like the flesh of a little child.
  3. THE FINAL REJOICING (2 Kings 5:15-19)
    1. His Offer of a Blessing (2 Kings 5:15-16)
      1. Naaman returned to the man of God (2 Kings 5:15).
      2. Naaman offered a blessing to Elisha (2 Kings 5:15).
      3. Elisha refused to receive the blessing from Naaman (2 Kings 5:16; Genesis 14:21-24; Daniel 5:17; Acts 8:18-20).
    2. His Taking of Some Earth (2 Kings 5:17-19)
      1. His request for some earth (2 Kings 5:17)
        1. The God of Israel was connected with the land of Israel.
        2. Moses was found standing on holy ground before God (Exodus 3:5).
        3. Naaman wanted some of that ground for a place of worship in Syria.
      2. His promise to sacrifice to the Lord only (2 Kings 5:17)
      3. His request for pardon (2 Kings 5:18)
        1. When he goes with his master to the house of Rimmon
        2. When he bows himself in the house of Rimmon
      4. His departure in peace (2 Kings 5:19)
  4. THE FORBIDDEN REWARD (2 Kings 5:20-27)
    1. Gehazi Requested a Reward of Naaman (2 Kings 5:20-22).
      1. He lusted after the riches of Naaman (2 Kings 5:20).
      2. He determined to have some for himself (2 Kings 5:20).
      3. He ran after Naaman and his riches (2 Kings 5:21).
      4. He made up a story to get the goods (2 Kings 5:22; 1 Timothy 6:9).
    2. Gehazi Hid the Reward in His House (2 Kings 5:23-24).
      1. Naaman gave Gehazi more than he asked (2 Kings 5:23; see 2 Kings 5:22).
        1. Two talents of silver
        2. Two changes of garments
      2. Naaman sent the goods with his servants (2 Kings 5:23).
      3. Gehazi put the goods in his house (2 Kings 5:24).
    3. Gehazi Received the Leprosy of Naaman (2 Kings 5:25-27).
      1. Gehazi denied having gone anywhere (2 Kings 5:25).
      2. Elisha knew exactly what Gehazi had done (2 Kings 5:26).
      3. Elisha said that it was not time to receive (2 Kings 5:26).
      4. Elisha prophesied concerning the leprosy of Naaman (2 Kings 5:27).
        1. To be on Gehazi
        2. To be on the seed of Gehazi
      5. Gehazi, went out from Elisha’s presence a leper (2 Kings 5:27).

CONCLUSION: Naaman got rid of his leprosy. But Gehazi got leprosy. Are you getting things right with God, or are you straying far from Him?
