Jeremiah Carried to Egypt

INTRODUCTION: Jerusalem and Judah had already fallen to the Babylonians. However, renegade soldiers had killed the governor that the Babylonians had set up for the people who remained in the land. Now, the people were afraid that they would all be destroyed. Since Jeremiah’s prophecies had always been true, they decided to ask him what they should do. This chapter tells of their response to God’s word.

  1. THE CONCERN OF THE REMNANT (Jeremiah 42:1-6)
    1. The Remnant’s Identity (Jeremiah 42:1)
      1. All the captains of the forces
      2. Johanan the son of Kareah
      3. Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah
      4. All the people from the least even unto the greatest

  2. THE RESPONSE OF THE LORD (Jeremiah 42:7-22)

      2. It took twenty-one days to get a response to Daniel (Daniel 10:11-13).
    2. The Audience for the Response (Jeremiah 42:7-8)
      1. The word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah (Jeremiah 42:7).

      1. Given after departure from Judah
      2. Given unto Jeremiah in the land of Egypt
    2. The Sign of the Prophecy (Jeremiah 43:9)
      1. Take great stones in hand and hide them in the clay in the brickkiln.
      2. In the sight of the men of Judah
    3. The Message of the Prophecy (Jeremiah 43:10-13)
      1. Nebuchadnezzar will spread his pavilion into Egypt (Jeremiah 43:10).
      2. He will come in judgment upon the inhabitants (Jeremiah 43:11).
      3. The gods of Egypt will be destroyed (Jeremiah 43:12-13).

CONCLUSION: We consider the Jews foolish because they did not obey God’s commands. They knew His words were true, but rejected them when they did not agree with their opinions. How often do we foolishly disobey God’s word as well?
