Straight from the Heart
Straight from the Heart
Psalm 4:4 Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
INTRODUCTORY THOUGHTS
It is very important that a man learns his spiritual heart condition. The Bible characterizes man’s heart as being naturally full of lies and deception (Jeremiah 17:9). A man cannot afford to leave off communication with his heart because he needs to find the truth of what lies within. Many fail to commune with their own hearts for fear of what they might discover. The psalmist was so concerned about this communication that he sought God’s help in searching his heart to determine its contents (Psalm 139:23-24). The idea of communing with one’s own heart might seem absurd to some people, but it is scriptural and imperative (see Psalm 77:6; Psalm 4:4). In fact, this communication aids in every other form of communication.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
(For children):God forgave David for many evil things including that of murder. When David’s son Absalom murdered his brother Amnon, Absalom fled from David’s presence for three years (2 Samuel 13:37-39). When David allowed Absalom to return home, David waited an additional two years before seeing him (2 Samuel 14:1, 21-24, 28). The end result of David and Absalom’s failure to communicate was disastrous. Had David communicated with Absalom, he might have seen what was in Absalom’s heart, enabling David to help Absalom.
(For everyone):What is in your heart? Are you bitter? Are you envious of the wicked? Why is it important that you be able to commune with your own heart?
(For everyone):What happens when we cease to communicate with our own hearts? How does that allow the heart to convince us that everything is alright when in reality it is not?
PRAYER THOUGHTS
Ask God to teach you to commune with your own heart.
Ask the Lord to reveal the wickedness that resides within your heart.
