The Path of the Hypocrite
INTRODUCTION: Though we do not generally know much about Abiathar, he is mentioned 31 times in the Bible. He served as priest under David beginning at the time of his exile from Saul. He was faithful to David until the end of David’s reign when he went after Adonijah. Because of his unfaithfulness, he lost the blessings he had enjoyed under David. As such, Adonijah is a type of the hypocrite. By studying his life, we learn much about the hypocrite. This is important because of the warnings of scripture:
1 Corinthians 15:1-2 [1] Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; [2] By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

2 Corinthians 13:5Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

[21] And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the LORD's priests.
[22] And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's house.
[23] Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.

[7] And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into mine hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars.
[8] And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.
[9] And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod.

[25] And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:
[26] But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.
[27] The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.
[28] See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.

[7] And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
[8] But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
[9] And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants:
