The Life of a Good Man
Introduction: This chapter contains a reference to three particular men. In Psalm 37:16A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.
See All... we find “a righteous man”, in Psalm 37:23The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
See All... we find “a good man”, and in Psalm 37:37Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.
See All... we find “the perfect man”. If we were to argue this from a New Testament viewpoint we might say that the “righteous man” (Psalm 37:16A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.
See All...) is a man that is has been saved and has the righteousness of Christ. We would say that the “good man” (Psalm 37:23The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
See All...) is not only a man who has been saved, but he is a man who allows the Lord to lead and direct him through life. As to the “perfect man” (Psalm 37:37Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.
See All...), we would have to say that this is a man who not only has the righteousness of God, not only does he allow the Lord to lead him and guide him, but he has reached a level of maturity in the Christian life so that things that might offend the righteous man and the good man will not even phase his fellowship with the Lord. The perfect man is unmovable. The main focus today will be that of the “good man”, but remember this man is not even where we ought to strive to be, he is merely a middle of the road believer.
- THE STEPS OF A GOOD MAN (Psalm 37:23The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
See All...) - Ordered by the Lord – From His Word (Psalm 119:133Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.
See All...) - Ordered by the Lord – In God’s Order
- Protected From Slipping (Psalm 37:30-31 [30] The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment.
[31] The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.
See All...) - Cannot Be Designed by Man (Jeremiah 10:23O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
See All...) - In Danger When His Eyes Go Astray (Psalm 73:2-3 [2] But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.
[3] For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
See All...) - Under Constant Attack from the Enemy (Psalm 17:8-12 [8] Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
[9] From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about.
[10] They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.
[11] They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth;
[12] Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
See All...; Psalm 57:4-6 [4] My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. [5] Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth. [6] They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.
See All...) - THE DELIGHT OF A GOOD MAN (Psalm 37:23The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
See All...) - He Delights in God’s Way (Psalm 37:23The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
See All...; Philippians 3:7-8 [7] I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction: and the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble. [8] Was the LORD displeased against the rivers? was thine anger against the rivers? was thy wrath against the sea, that thou didst ride upon thine horses and thy chariots of salvation?
See All...) - He Delights in the Law of the Lord (Psalm 1:2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
See All...) - THE FALL OF A GOOD MAN (Psalm 37:24Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.
See All...) - A Possibility – Though he fall
- Adam fell when he partook of the fruit.
- Noah fell when he got drunk after the flood.
- Abraham fell when listened to Sarah on the matter of Hagar.
- Lot fell when he went to Sodom.
- Moses fell when he smote the rock instead of speaking to the rock.
- Aaron fell when he made a calf and led the congregation in pagan worship.
- David fell when he sinned with Bathsheba and had her husband murdered.
- Solomon fell because he gave his heart to outlandish women.
- Elijah fell when he ran from Jezebel because of fear.
- Peter fell when he denied the Lord three times.
- The disciples fell when they hid themselves after the death of Christ because of fear.
- Not Permanent – He shall not be utterly cast down (Proverbs 24:16For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.
See All...; 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 [8] We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; [9] Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
See All...) - Rescued by the Lord – for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand
Conclusion: Are your steps being ordered by the Lord? Do you delight in the will and way of the Lord for your life? Have you fallen? Have you risen back up to get back in the fight? These things describe a middle of the road believer. Where does that place you?
