The Doctrine of Christ - The Transfiguration
Scripture Passage:
Matthew 17:1-13 - THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE TRANSFIGURATION
- The Time of the Transfiguration
- After the preaching of the cross (Matthew 16:21-23 [21] From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
[22] Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.
[23] But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
See All...; Mark 8:31-33 [31] And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. [32] And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. [33] But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
See All...; Luke 9:22Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
See All...) - After a call for followers to carry their cross (Matthew 16:24-28 [24] Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
[25] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
[26] For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
[27] For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
[28] Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
See All...; Mark 8:34-38 [34] And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. [35] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. [36] For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? [37] Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? [38] Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
See All...; Luke 9:23-27 [23] And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. [24] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. [25] For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? [26] For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels. [27] But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

See All...; see John 19:28After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
See All...). - Their significance
- Their ministry
- The Lord did not come to destroy the law and the prophets (Matthew 5:17Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
See All...). - The law and the prophets prophesied until John (Matthew 11:13For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
See All...; Luke 16:16The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.

See All...; Luke 9:36And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
See All...). Jesus Christ only, what a message! - Their future coming
- The prophetic strength of Moses and Elijah is mainly directed at Elijah.
- We are told several times in scripture that Elijah has to come again.
- By a close look at the scriptures you will realize that John the Baptist could have been Elijah if the Jews would have accepted him (Matthew 11:12-14 [12] And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
[13] For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
[14] And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
See All...), but when they did not the Lord told them that Elijah must come again (Matthew 17:11And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
See All...). - It is very important to realize that the Lord had everything in place to establish His kingdom with the Jewish people on earth, but when they rejected Him their kingdom was postponed.
- This postponement means that Elijah still must come again for he is to come before the great and dreadful day of the Lord (Malachi 4:5Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
See All...). - Characteristics of the witnesses (See the table at the end of this outline.)
- Note: It is also interesting as to why the body of Moses was such a hot topic with the Devil (Jude 1:9Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
See All...) - Their departure
- They began to depart from the Lord Jesus (Luke 9:33And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
