The Cycle of Love

Scripture Passage:
John 15:9-12

Introduction:  Love is one of the most misunderstood concepts of our day.  We are told that love is an emotion that cares not for the circumstances surrounding it.  Love is not supposed to demand anything, nor is it to be biased.  However, the Bible deals much with love and the misuse by the multitudes should not drive the Bible-believer away from its practice.  In John chapter 15 we find some glorious truths concerning the love of the Father and the love of the Son.

  1. THE FATHER'S LOVE FOR THE SON (John 15:9)
    1. Untainted by Sin
      1. The Father’s love of righteousness (Psalm 146:8; Proverbs 15:9)
      2. The Father’s love of judgment (Isaiah 61:8)
      3. The effects of iniquity (Matthew 24:12)
      4. The undivided fellowship (Amos 3:3)
      5. Based on the Son’s obedience (John 10:17)
    2. Declared from Heaven
      1. At our Lord’s baptism (Matthew 3:16-17)
      2. At our Lord’s transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-5)
    3. Manifested in His Actions
      1. The Father has given all into the hands of the Son (John 3:35)
      2. The Father shows the Son all that He does (John 5:20)
    4. From Eternity Past (John 17:24)
  2. THE SON'S LOVE FOR THE BELIEVER (John 15:9)
    1. Manifested at Calvary (Romans 5:8; Galatians 2:20)
    2. Inseparable Love (Romans 8:35-39)
    3. A Love that Passeth Knowledge (Ephesians 3:19)
  3. THE BELIEVER'S LOVE FOR OTHER BELIEVERS (John 15:12)
    1. A New Commandment (John 13:34)
    2. A Token of Our Discipleship (John 13:35)
    3. A Token of Our Salvation (1 John 3:14)
    4. A Sacrificial Love (1 John 3:16)
    5. An Evidence of Our Love for God (1 John 4:20)

Conclusion:  The glorious doctrine of the Father’s love for the Son, being the love of the Son for the believer is not just for the increase of our joy and knowledge.  It is demonstrated so that we might know the extent to which we are to love our brothers and sisters in Christ.  How should we love our brethren?  Like the Son loves us and like the Father loves the Son.
