Salutations, a Window to the Soul - 1 Samuel 25:2-14
See All...
INTRODUCTION
A man’s salutation is the initial window to the condition of his heart. David sent out ten of his young men to salute Nabal (1 Samuel 25:14But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed on them.

Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?" (1 Samuel 25:10-11 [10] And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.
[11] Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?
See All...). Why did Nabal respond in such a way? Because he was "churlish and evil in his doings" (1 Samuel 25:3Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) Martha's and Mary's salutations showed much sorrow in their souls (John 11:20-21 [20] Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
[21] Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
See All...; 32). Boaz's salutations showed a kind, generous person (Ruth 2:4And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD bless thee.

Mary's salutation to Elisabeth showed a believing heart (Luke 1:39-45 [39] And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; [40] And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. [41] And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: [42] And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. [43] And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? [44] For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. [45] And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
See All...). - How do you greet others when things are going well in your life? How do you greet others when you are struggling spiritually? What does this teach you about the connection between your salutations and your walk with God?
- How can your salutation hurt your testimony? How can it hinder you from being able to reach the lost?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to teach you the importance of your salutation.
- Ask God to help your greetings reflect a healthy walk with God.
